Under the guidance of the charted members, the next Guardians of the Sphinx were made. For several months after their initiation there was a PERIOD OF CONSOLIDATION.įrom the original seven, the membership of Pi Sigma Chapter began to steadily grow. Brothers living in one dormitory natural grew closer to members living in the same dormitory, and members also gravitated toward other members who shared the same or similar ideology. Among these new charter members there was a division based on the residency and ideology. Pi Sigma is the 548th undergraduate chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. 10, 1985 they received their charter allowing them to establish Pi Sigma Chapter at Aurora College. These new members were initiated and made on and on Aug. These men became the charter members of Pi Sigma Chapter and are known as U.S.S. Over the following 10 weeks, only seven truly inspired, dedicated, and strong brothers were tenacious enough to persevere. When they began, there were eleven young men interested, after the first night and the initiation into the Sphinx Club, there were only 9. Two of these undergraduates from Eta Eta were Bro. Three undergraduate brothers from Eta Eta Chapter, seated at Western University, were recruited to begin pledging these young men. Led by the drive and determination of DeAndre Redd, the young men then turned to two Graduate Chapter brothers from Mu Mu Lambda Chapter based in nearby Glen Ellyn. He later went on to join another fraternal order. During this period, the faculty administrator was also seeking membership, but later abandoned his pursuit. Seeking the guidance and advice of a black faculty administrator, these young men contacted and actively sought out Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. While active in various social or literary clubs, these young men were desirous of creating a stronger and fraternal bond. itself.ĭuring the 1984-85 school year at Aurora College, a predominately white institution located in Aurora IL., several young black men enrolled under the various undergraduate degrees. ![]() If you have questions about a specific chapter’s recruitment/intake process, please contact the IGC advisor, Janáe Tucker, for more information.The origin of Pi Sigma Chapter parallels almost exactly the history of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Some chapters work closely with a Graduate Chapter, comprised of members who were initiated after having graduated college, and/or their inter/national headquarters to receive permission to conduct a recruitment/intake process. All second-semester freshmen, as well as sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to participate in the recruitment/intake if they meet the eligibility requirements. IGC conducts recruitment/intake processes which may include interest meetings and/or chapter-specific events where candidates (also known as “aspirants”) can learn about the organization. IGC chapters embrace a lifetime commitment and focus on academic achievement, cultural competence, and community service. Both the frequency and timing of the process are at the discretion of each organization. Each chapter coordinates their own process that is not regulated by the IGC. Membership in IGC organizations is open to all, and the Intake/Recruitment process will vary from chapter to chapter on a rolling basis throughout the academic year.
